More than 600 days passed between competitions; David Douglas, Gladstone, Putnam hosted events in opening weekend

Dance teams around the state have returned to competition for the first time in more than 600 days. Twenty-six teams kicked off the first weekend of fall competitions Nov. 6.

High school dance teams had their 2019-2020 season abruptly end prior to the 2020 OSAA championships due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In response to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, during the 2020-2021 season dance teams were evaluated by judges for scores but didn’t compete against other teams for placements. The return to competition was met with excitement and enthusiasm from dancers, coaches, families, and dance fans. Through DDCA social media people shared what they were looking forward to during the first weekend competition. Common themes included: watching in-person, seeing dance friends, regularity, and being together.

Teams competing in the fall are eligible to qualify for the DDCA Category Championships scheduled for December 4 by placing 1st or 2nd and earning a score of at least 13.6.
